Parkway Bakery & Tavern

Branding

Parkway Bakery over the years.

The Situation

New Orleans restaurant icon since 1911, Parkway Bakery and Tavern approached the agency to create a consistent brand presence. Known most for its poor boy sandwiches (or “po-boys”), it also sports a hefty menu of New Orleans favorites like gumbo, bread pudding, and of course, plenty of cocktails, beer and wine.

But it’s the poor boy sandwich — and the hard times that created it — that Parkway honors most. You can see this posture in the creativity and quality of their food for “real” people, in the way they came back after Katrina put 10 feet of water in their building, and in their enduring tagline, “Parkway for Poor Boys.”

The Solution

It was from this grit and heart that their new logo emerged: the strong and approachable Clarendon typeface paired with a simple rendering of the early Ford model that sits on the patio, all complemented by a color palette drawn from their building and Mid-City neighborhood.

My Role

Lead Designer (independent contractor), with RAPJAB Agency. I designed the logo, brand standards, and tavern menu.
